What Is The USPS No-Fee PO Box Program?

Do you check your mail regularly? It’s likely full of bills or junk mail that’s probably going in the trash. You’ll forget what those letters said before they hit the bin. But what about those without a home? What about the resources that require a mailing address to even qualify?

That’s where the USPS no-fee PO Box program comes in. It’s a program that serves as a secure, reliable mailing address for receiving mail, government documents, and correspondence. Everything requires an address. Without it, many people will miss out on life-changing opportunities.

Who Qualifies For A Free PO Box?

When you need resources to survive each day, the free PO Boxes at USPS can be a lifesaver. To qualify for the free PO Box for the homeless community, you’ll need:

2 Valid Forms Of Identification:

Photo ID Options:

  • Valid U.S. driver’s license or state non-driver’s identification card
  • U.S. Armed Forces, government, university, or recognized corporate employee identification card
  • Passport, passport card, alien registration card, or certificate of naturalization
  • NEXUS or Matricula Consular card.

Non-Photo ID Options:

  • Voter or vehicle registration card
  • Home or vehicle insurance policy
  • A homeless certification from a shelter, charity, or social services official

A social security card, credit card, or birth certificate cannot qualify as an acceptable form of ID. Once you have these documents, you can head to your
nearest post office or apply online

USPS workers are allowed some discretion in the process, so they might waive the ID requirement if you’re unable to acquire the right documents. It’s not a guarantee, but you can ask the clerk. If not, you can provide a point of contact, like a shelter or a charitable organization, to vouch for you.

Someone in transitional or temporary stays may also qualify for a USPS PO Box. Economy Hotel is a great place to settle down for an extended stay. How To Apply: Steps To Securing Your Free Mailing Address

The application process for a free mailing address at USPS is super simple.

  1. Call USPS to find out which local office is participating in the USPS no-fee PO Box program. It’s not available at every USPS location, so it’s important to verify before you visit the nearest USPS.
  2. Once you’re at the participating office, the clerk will provide you with an application, and you will be required to show proper identification or a homeless certification. The application can be downloaded from the USPS website in advance, or you can fill it out in person.
  3. Once the information you provided is verified, the fee will be waived (Established under the Group E PO Box classification).
  4. You will be provided with a PO Box address and can begin your service.
